The same locally sourced stone used in the fireplace also forms the trim throughout the building and the foundations of the reconstructed historic depot structures. A true geologic centerpiece of the Winter Fireplace Tour, Gunflint Lodge's two fireplaces are composed of stone fragments that formed as a result of one of history's largest meteorite impacts. This meteorite struck the Earth around 2 billion years ago, and these rocks traveled nearly 500 miles from the location of present-day Sudbury, Ontario, to Gunflint Lake! Stop in and warm up with a hot chocolate, cocktail, or a bowl of our signature walleye chowder. Access to the 70km Upper Gunflint Ski Trail System and snowmobile trail is just outside our doorstep.
